Fes is the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities and its cultural and spiritual heart. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is UNESCO-listed and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world — a maze of some nine thousand lanes where it’s easy to get lost and hard to see the best of it without a guide.
This full-day tour puts a knowledgeable local guide at your side to make sense of it: the great mosque and university of Al-Qarawiyyin, the carved madrasas, the famous tanneries, the craft workshops, and the old Jewish quarter. It’s a walking day through living history, ending with a panoramic view over the city.

MORNING: ROYAL PALACE GATES -> MEDINA
We meet you at your accommodation in Fes and begin at the golden gates of the Royal Palace in Fes el-Jdid, then enter the medina. With a local guide leading the way, we walk to Al-Qarawiyyin — the mosque and university founded in 859 AD — and the finely carved Al-Attarine and Bou Inania madrasas.
MIDDAY: TANNERIES & CRAFTS
The tour continues to the Chouara tanneries, the open-air dye pits best viewed from the surrounding leather terraces, and through the craft quarters — coppersmiths, weavers, and the Nejjarine woodwork area with its tiled fountain. Lunch is in the medina (not included), perhaps at a traditional riad restaurant.
AFTERNOON: MELLAH -> VIEWPOINT
In the afternoon we visit the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, then drive up to one of the hilltop fortresses (the Borj or the Merenid Tombs) for a panoramic view over the whole medina before returning to your accommodation.

A: Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, is approximately 560 kilometres (348 miles) from Marrakech. Given this distance, our 3-day tours from Marrakech include an overnight stop in the Dades Valley en route, rather than attempting to cover the journey in a single day.
Q: How far is the Sahara desert from Fes?
A: The journey from Fes to the Merzouga desert covers roughly 500 kilometres, equivalent to approximately 310 miles.
Q: How far is Casablanca from the desert?
A: Casablanca sits approximately 660 kilometres (around 410 miles) from the Merzouga desert. A tour of five days or more is recommended when departing from Casablanca in order to allow adequate time in the desert without excessive driving pressure.
