DAY 1: MARRAKECH -> HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS -> AIT BEN HADDOU -> DADES VALLEY
Your five day tour begins with a pick-up from your accommodation. Leaving Marrakech, the road crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with photo stops at scenic spots and the freedom to pause whenever you like.
After lunch in Ait Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, the route heads towards the Dades Gorge through Skoura and the Valley of Roses. In Skoura’s oasis you can visit the Amridil Kasbah, a striking fortified village; in spring, we can stop to see the valley in bloom. Arriving at the Dades Gorge, you’ll take in the “monkey fingers” rock formations and a panoramic view before checking in for dinner and the night.

DAY 2: DADES VALLEY -> TODRA GORGE -> MERZOUGA
After breakfast at your hotel in the Dades Valley, we drive to Tinghir, with its oasis and old kasbahs that once housed Berber and Jewish communities side by side. You’ll walk beneath the 300-metre cliffs of the Todra Gorge before continuing to the Sahara.
After lunch en route, your camel guide and camels are ready to lead you across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes to camp. You’ll stop on a high dune for sunset and sandboarding, and as night falls the camp staff serve dinner and play Berber drums around a campfire under the stars.

DAY 3: EXPLORATIVE DAY OF THE DESERT
An early start is worth it for a quiet sunrise from camp. After breakfast, a 4×4 picks you up for a full day in the Sahara: first, a drive out to where the nomads are settled, who host you for tea in their tent and show how they live far from any town; then a hidden abandoned village home to the old galena mines, which you can see; next the village of Khamlia, where locals — whose roots trace to southern African countries such as Sudan — play Gnawa music, and where you can have lunch at a local restaurant; and finally, water levels permitting, the lake near Merzouga before heading to your riad.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA -> RISSANI -> AGDEZ -> OUARZAZATE
An early start is rewarded with another quiet sunrise from your riad terrace. We then set off, stopping first in the old city of Rissani to visit a traditional souk. From there the road heads to Ouarzazate through the Draa Valley, with a stop at Agdez to take in the valley landscapes. You’ll arrive at your riad in Ouarzazate in the afternoon.

DAY 5: OUARZAZATE -> AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH -> TELOUET KASBAH -> MARRAKECH
After breakfast at your riad, we explore Ouarzazate — gateway to the Sahara and the Hollywood of Africa — home to the historic Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Studios.
From there the journey continues to Ait Ben Haddou to explore the kasbah, UNESCO-listed since 1987 and a film set for Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones, among others. The road then climbs back into the High Atlas towards Marrakech, with a stop to admire the Kasbah of Telouet. Drop-off at your Marrakech accommodation marks the end of the tour.

A: Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, is approximately 560 kilometres (348 miles) from Marrakech. Given this distance, our 3-day tours from Marrakech include an overnight stop in the Dades Valley en route, rather than attempting to cover the journey in a single day.
Q: How far is the Sahara desert from Fes?
A: The journey from Fes to the Merzouga desert covers roughly 500 kilometres, equivalent to approximately 310 miles.
Q: How far is Casablanca from the desert?
A: Casablanca sits approximately 660 kilometres (around 410 miles) from the Merzouga desert. A tour of five days or more is recommended when departing from Casablanca in order to allow adequate time in the desert without excessive driving pressure.
Q: Is the camel ride compulsory?
