Three of Morocco’s most important historical sites sit within an hour of Fez, and this day links them in a single loop: the Roman city of Volubilis, the holy town of Moulay Idriss, and the imperial capital of Meknes. Together they span nearly two thousand years — Roman mosaics, an early Islamic shrine town, and the grand gates of a 17th-century sultan.
It’s a history-focused day with plenty of walking among ruins and monuments, but no hard hiking. Volubilis has some of the best-preserved Roman remains in North Africa; Moulay Idriss is a whitewashed hill town built around the tomb of the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty; and Meknes is a UNESCO-listed imperial city of walls, gates, and granaries.

MORNING: FEZ -> VOLUBILIS
We pick you up from your accommodation in Fez and drive to Volubilis, about an hour away. The Roman city, founded in the 3rd century BC and built up under Roman rule, is remarkably well preserved — the triumphal arch, the basilica, the capitol, and large floor mosaics still in place. A walk through the site, ideally with a local guide, brings it to life.
MIDDAY: MOULAY IDRISS -> MEKNES
A short drive away is Moulay Idriss, a whitewashed town spilling across two hills around the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, who brought Islam to Morocco and founded its first dynasty. There’s time to take in the views and walk the steep lanes before continuing to Meknes for lunch (not included).
AFTERNOON: MEKNES -> FEZ
In Meknes we see the great gate of Bab el Mansour, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables built to supply the imperial city. After time in the medina, we drive back to Fez, arriving in the late afternoon.

A: Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, is approximately 560 kilometres (348 miles) from Marrakech. Given this distance, our 3-day tours from Marrakech include an overnight stop in the Dades Valley en route, rather than attempting to cover the journey in a single day.
Q: How far is the Sahara desert from Fes?
A: The journey from Fes to the Merzouga desert covers roughly 500 kilometres, equivalent to approximately 310 miles.
Q: How far is Casablanca from the desert?
A: Casablanca sits approximately 660 kilometres (around 410 miles) from the Merzouga desert. A tour of five days or more is recommended when departing from Casablanca in order to allow adequate time in the desert without excessive driving pressure.
