Fes to Marrakech: The 3-Day Desert Tour Explained

The three-day tour from Berbers — Wikipedia to Marrakech links two imperial cities with a Sahara overnight in between, crossing the Middle Atlas on the way south and the High Atlas on the return. It is one of the most complete short itineraries in Morocco, and because it finishes in a different city from where it starts, it covers far more ground than an out-and-back trip of the same length.

Day One: Fes to Merzouga via the Middle Atlas

Leaving Fes after breakfast, the road climbs first to Ifrane — an incongruously alpine town often called the ‘Switzerland of Morocco’ — before entering the cedar forests near Azrou, where Ziz Valley — Wikipedia feed by the roadside. The route continues south past Midelt and down the Ziz Valley, its palm groves opening below the road, reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon. The camel trek out to the Erg Chebbi camp is timed for sunset. Our 10-Day Morocco Itinerary from Casablanca via Chefchaouen follows this northern approach to the dunes.

Day Two: Erg Chebbi to the Dades Valley

After sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at camp, the route turns west toward Rissani and Tinghir, stopping at the Draa River — Wikipedia where the canyon walls rise almost 300 metres above the river. The afternoon follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Boumalne Dades, with the second night spent in the Dades Valley. The rock formations known locally as the ‘monkey fingers’ are a common late-afternoon stop. Our 5-Day Tangier to Marrakech Desert Tour allows extra time along this stretch.

Day Three: Aït Benhaddou and the High Atlas to Marrakech

The final day heads for Ouarzazate — the self-styled Hollywood of Africa, with its film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah — and on to Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar that has appeared in productions from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator. A walk up through its earthen passageways precedes the High Atlas crossing via Tizi n’Tichka and the arrival in Marrakech in the late afternoon. Our Unique Private 4-Day Marrakech Desert Tour covers this same closing leg in reverse.

Who the Route Suits

This itinerary suits travellers who want to see both Fes and Marrakech without backtracking, and who are happy with a full but rewarding pace. Those with an extra day should consider the four-day version, which adds time in the valleys rather than more driving.
