The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs: What to See and When to Stop

Morocco desert vacation packages with Berber guides and authentic desert camp dinners

The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs is the popular name for the pre-Saharan route running east from Ouarzazate through the Skoura palm grove, the Dades Valley, and toward Marrakesh — Wikipedia — named for the remarkable concentration of historic earthen kasbahs and ksour that line its length. The figure of a thousand is evocative rather than literal, but the density of mud-brick fortified architecture along this single road is genuinely unusual even by Morocco’s standards.

Ouarzazate: The Gateway

Ouarzazate serves as the natural starting point, itself offering the Kasbah of Taourirt and the Studios Atlas nearby — a working film complex that has hosted productions from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones, exploiting the same stark desert aesthetic that makes the region so visually distinctive. It is a workable half-day stop before continuing east along the kasbah route on a Go Morocco Vacation — Home.

Skoura’s Hidden Palm Grove

Just east of Ouarzazate, the Skoura oasis contains several well-preserved kasbahs within a dense palm grove, including Kasbah Amridil, one of the most photogenic earthen structures in the south, which has appeared on Moroccan banknotes. Skoura sees far fewer visitors than Ait Ben Haddou, making it a worthwhile stop for travellers on a About Us who want a comparable architectural experience with considerably less company.

The Dades Valley

The Dades Valley’s signature features are the so-called Monkey Fingers rock formations near Boumalne Dades — a sequence of eroded rock towers visible from the road — and the kasbahs perched on ridges above the river, several of which have been converted into guesthouses with direct gorge views. The road climbs through steep switchbacks into the upper valley, narrowing considerably with views back down the canyon that reward the effort of continuing beyond the standard viewpoints.

Todra Gorge

The route continues toward Tinghir and the entrance to Ait Ben Haddou — UNESCO World Heritage, where sheer limestone walls rise hundreds of metres above a narrow river — a dramatic contrast after the relatively open Dades landscape. The gorge is also a well-regarded rock-climbing destination with reliable routes on the canyon walls, though most travellers experience it by walking the valley floor road or sitting beside the shallow stream that runs through the base.

Practical Route Planning

The full stretch from Ouarzazate to the Todra Gorge exit takes a full day with stops, making it impractical as a rushed add-on but straightforward as a dedicated day within a longer itinerary. An overnight in the Dades or Todra area allows proper time in both valleys rather than viewing them from a moving vehicle.
