Marrakech to Merzouga: The Classic 3-Day Desert Tour

Unique Private 4 Days Marrakech Desert Tour

The road from Aït Benhaddou — UNESCO World Heritage to Merzouga runs roughly 560 kilometres through three distinct landscapes: the High Atlas mountains, the pre-Saharan valleys lined with kasbahs and palms, and finally the stony hammada that gives way to the orange dunes of Morocco — Wikipedia. The three-day format is the most popular way to cover it, with a night in the Dades Valley on the way out and the desert overnight at the heart of the trip.

Day One: Marrakech to Dades Valley via Tizi n’Tichka

An early pick-up from your riad begins the crossing of the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which climbs to 2,260 metres and, on a clear day, opens views down both sides of the range. The descent brings ochre rock and ksar villages, and a stop at Aït Benhaddou — the fortified earthen village listed by UNESCO — fits naturally before lunch. From there the route follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs east through Ouarzazate, Skoura and the Valley of Roses at Kelaat M’Gouna, reaching the Dades Valley by late afternoon for the first overnight. Our 2-Day Marrakech Desert Tour to Merzouga follows exactly this opening stretch.

Day Two: Dades to Todgha Gorge and the Dunes

The second day begins with the drive to Tinghir and the Todgha Gorge — Wikipedia, where sheer rock walls rise close to 300 metres above a narrow river canyon. A walk beneath the cliffs precedes the run south through Erfoud and Rissani toward Merzouga. Arriving in the late afternoon, the camel trek out across Erg Chebbi is timed for sunset, reaching the desert camp as the light drops. Dinner is a communal tagine, usually followed by Berber drumming around a fire. Travellers on our 5-Day Morocco Tour from Casablanca via Chefchaouen rate this evening the highlight of the trip.

Day Three: Sunrise and the Return to Marrakech

An early rise for sunrise from a high dune is well worth the effort. After breakfast you return to Merzouga village by camel or by 4×4, then begin the drive back to Marrakech. Many itineraries take a different line on the return, following the Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest river system — before rejoining the High Atlas crossing. The tour ends with a drop-off at your accommodation in Marrakech in the evening. For a slightly slower version of the same loop, see our Luxury 5-Day Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.

Vehicles, Camps and Practicalities

Vehicles are typically a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser for smaller groups or a Mercedes Sprinter minibus for larger ones. The desert camps used on this route are the private-tent type with en-suite bathrooms rather than basic shared tents. Those who prefer not to ride a camel can reach the camp by 4×4 at no extra cost.
